Charli XCX: Three Grammy wins for former Bishop’s Stortford College pupil

Former Bishop’s Stortford College student-turned-pop superstar Charli XCX has won three Grammy awards.

The 32-year-old, who was brought up in Start Hill, also performed at the glittering ceremony in Los Angeles with renditions of hits Von Dutch, from her Number 1 album Brat, and Guess, her collaboration with Billie Eilish.

The singer, who honed her skills at Bishop’s Stortford Acoustic Club, South Mill Arts and Stortford Music Festival Bish Bash, picked up three of the “Oscars for Music” at an event dominated by the aftermath of the devastating Californian wildfires.

She won Best Electronic/Dance Album for Brat, Best Dance Pop Recording for Von Dutch and Best Recording Package for Brat after securing nominations in eight categories.

Born Charlotte Aitchison, she earned her first Grammy nomination in 2015 for her hit Iggy Azalea collaboration, Fancy.

Charli, who is signed to Atlantic, is on the short list for five BRIT awards next month.

After her parents, Shameera and John, helped her make her first album, she began posting on MySpace in 2008. She was soon spotted by Chaz Cool, a promoter running warehouse raves and parties in London, and by 2010 she had a recording contract.

She made her name in 2012 with her hit, I Love It, collaborating with Swedish synth-pop duo Icona Pop.
