Institute of Physics honours outstanding Birchwood High School teacher Thomas William-Powlett
A Birchwood High School teacher has been honoured for his educational excellence.
Thomas William-Powlett won a 2022 Teacher of Physics Award from the Institute of Physics (IOP) for his inspirational classes.
Birchwood head Dr Chris Ingate said: "Thomas is an outstanding teacher whose passion for physics is infectious.
"Physics is one of the most popular A-level courses in the school with both girls and boys, and his reputation plays a large part in this.
"He dedicates time to equipping first-generation university applicants to receive offers from universities with outstanding success. Two of last year's students are currently studying at Oxford.
"Thomas is determined to ensure that physics is a highly enjoyable and practical subject, and draws upon the widest range of resources to enrich his teaching and to share with colleagues.
"During the pandemic, he led whole-staff training on the use of remote learning tools that enabled them to create high-quality lessons. He also produced practical tasks that could be carried out at home. His training sessions upskill staff in a wide variety of activities they would not otherwise know about.
"Thomas produces The Physics Teaching Podcast, created to support non-specialists and solo physics teachers, and has numerous listeners from across the globe, enabling them to strengthen their own pedagogy."
Mr William-Powlett received a cash prize, a paperweight award and a certificate to recognise his efforts.
Chris Shepherd, IOP strategic lead for recruitment and retraining, said: "I'm delighted to be recognising and applauding Thomas.
"Each of this year's winners has, through their skill and personal commitment, made a significant positive difference in the teaching of physics in their school, the student experience and the level of student achievement.
"On behalf of the Institute of Physics, I warmly congratulate all of them and thank them for their dedication to their students, their school and their subject."
The IOP is the UK and Ireland's professional body for physicists. Its members come from across the physics community, including academia, research, industry and education.
