Rail unions suspend Greater Anglia train strikes as mark of respect to Queen

Strikes set to disrupt Greater Anglia train services have been cancelled by the unions as a mark of respect to Queen Elizabeth II.

After the death of the monarch was confirmed by Buckingham Palace on Thursday (Sept 8), the general secretary of the RMT (National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers) Mick Lynch said: "RMT joins the whole nation in paying its respects to Queen Elizabeth.

"The planned railway strike action on September 15 and 17 is suspended.

Services on the West Anglia line between Cambridge and London Liverpool Street were also set to be disrupted by industrial action by Aslef (Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen) train drivers.

However, a spokesman for the union said: "In the light of the sad news of the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Aslef has decided to postpone its industrial action on Thursday September 15. We express our deepest condolences to her family, her friends and the country."
