Travellers have occupied a school playing field in Bishop's Stortford this afternoon (Easter Monday).

The two grass pitches off Dunmow Road, by the roundabout junction with Parsonage Lane, are part of Birchwood High School's campus and are separated by a line of trees from the Woodside industrial estate.

Four caravans – at least two of them motorised – and other vehicles moved onto the field at about 2pm after a gate was taken off its hinges.

Cllr Colin Woodward, in whose East Herts Council ward the field is situated, said that he had informed police and EHC's duty officer, who will be in touch with Birchwood and education authority Herts County Council with a view to taking action to evict the occupants.
