Travellers who moved into Stansted’s Lower Street car park over the weekend could be there for several days while authorities seek to remove them.

Around 12 car parking spaces that are usually reserved for season ticket holders have been taken over by several large caravans and vehicles, which pitched up close to the village skate park.

Officials from the Essex Countywide Traveller Unit (ECTU) attended the scene early Monday morning (Feb 17) following notification from Uttlesford District Council that the travellers had moved onto public land.

An Essex County Council spokesperson said: “The ECTU is currently aware of this and has visited the encampment.

“The ECTU is managing it through the local authority powers available to us on behalf of Uttlesford District Council. Potentially, it could take up to seven-10 working days to resolve any encampment that requires the full court process of land repossession.”

One commuter, who arrived early Monday morning to park his car, said: “I was surprised to see them there.”
