Two people square up with knives and baseball bat in Waitrose




An 18-year-old man is in police custody after an incident which culminated in two people squaring up with knives and a baseball bat in Waitrose in Bishop’s Stortford.

Police were called at 5.39pm on Wednesday (December 11) after an altercation outside the YMCA in Northgate End continued inside the supermarket a few hundred yards round the corner.

A male picked up two large knives from the counter after being followed into the store by someone holding a baseball bat.

A spokesman for Hertfordshire Constabulary said: “It was reported that a male was followed into Waitrose by an unknown person(s), who were in possession of a baseball bat, following an earlier altercation outside the YMCA.

“The male continued into the store and picked up two large knives from a counter before returning them. No injuries were reported inside the store.”

“A male, aged 18, was arrested on suspicion of burglary, affray and possession of an offensive weapon. He remains in police custody for questioning.”
