Uttlesford Lib Dems call for cross-party support against Government’s winter fuel allowance cuts

Cross-party support against cuts in winter fuel allowance for pensioners is being sought amongst district councillors in Uttlesford.

The Liberal Democrats have called on opposition leaders to join them in condemning the proposed Government funding cuts.

They claim that 90% of pensioners – around 16,000 in Uttlesford – will no longer qualify for the £200-£300 benefit under Labour’s new plans.

Stansted district member Cllr Alan Dean said: “Uttlesford Liberal Democrats believe that the Labour Government has set the threshold at which pensioners do not qualify for Winter Fuel Payment far too low.

“Only those receiving a pension of less that £218.15 a week (or £332.95 a week for couples) are eligible for pension credits. This is significantly lower than the living wage rate.”

The Lib Dems are also urging the council to write to all those who are eligible for pension credits, but who do not currently claim for it.
