Sawbridgeworth Town Council agrees to fund event marking 80th anniversary of VE Day
Plans are being hatched to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day in Sawbridgeworth next year, a town council meeting heard.
Town projects manager said two meetings had been held in July and September, with town councillors and representatives of appropriate community groups present.
She had evaluated the recommendations and ideas from the meetings, and a sum of £5,000 had been added to the council’s draft budget to provide an event in the town.
Mayor Cllr Reece Smith said that the council should go for a large celebration event and councillors agreed for the sum to be included in next year’s budget.
VE (Victory in Europe) Day celebrates the formal acceptance by the Second World War Allies of Germany’s unconditional surrender of its armed forces on 8 May 1945.
