Bishop's Stortford care home Hazel End takes guests on a virtual cruise

Residents of a Bishop's Stortford care home have spent the summer enjoying a virtual world cruise.

Since July, staff at Hazel End Care Home in Kitcheners Road, St Michael's Hurst, have been treating guests to a taste of countries across the globe as part of their 'voyage'.

The first port of call was the USA, kicking off with a breakfast of red, white and blue decorated blueberry muffins, followed by an American-style barbecue lunch of burgers and hot dogs with all the accompaniments, enjoyed in the tearoom decorated with the Stars and Stripes.

Throughout the day, the songs of American country music legends including Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton and Pasty Cline could be heard being played around the home as residents enjoyed sharing stories of holidays in the States and fond memories of their times away.

The second destination was Italy. Drinks with their "captain", the home's manager Allison Squires, included the classic aperitif Aperol Spritz, which has become a firm favourite, washed down with Parma ham, mozzarella cheese and olives.

During this tasting session, Italian facts and trivia were discussed and photos admired while the home's Lifestyle team wore togas.

Entertainment included a sing-along of Dean Martin's ode to Naples, That's Amore, and a screening of the Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck classic film Roman Holiday.

Other countries on the itinerary include Germany, Mexico, Romania, Portugal, France, China and Sweden, with a return to the United States and Hawaii as the final destination for the weekly activity.

In keeping with the cruise theme, staff have also organised a cabaret show and a casino afternoon at the 66-bedroom facility.
