Essex Trading Standards officers, who regularly screen goods imported through Stansted Airport, detained a number of "Dyson Supersonic" hairdryers.

Although the dryers initially looked convincing, the cost to the importer was $8 (approximately £6) per unit. The hairdryer normally retails for a minimum of £300 – 50 times the price.

A spokesman said: "An inspection of the packaging, consideration to where the products had been imported from and dialogue with the brand holders gives our officers the expertise to make decisions about the authenticity of these types of product.

"Hairdryers like this have not been subjected to the stringent safety testing, and it serves to show the dangers of buying cheap copies and the risks associated in doing so.

"These hairdryers have now been held and are awaiting destruction. All our seized items are disposed of with the environment in mind."
