Residents have the chance to go messing about on the water as Sawbridgeworth holds it first River Day on Saturday (May 21).

The event at Sheering Mill Lock is being organised by the town council in conjunction with the Canal & River Trust to celebrate the River Stort navigation which runs through the town.

A range of activities will include free kayaking sessions with local canoe club Whoosh and trips on the trust’s canal boat.

The local citizen science group, run by environmental expert Bob Reed, will have a ‘Bio Zone’ tent in which visitors can investigate water quality for phosphates and nitrates, and, providing the weather is good, listen to what is happening in the river using a hydrophone and see what is living in the river on a fish cam.

Residents can also find out about the Canal & River Trust, including volunteering opportunities. The trust looks after 2,000 miles of waterways connecting hundreds of wildlife habitats, 2,980 bridges, 1,580 locks and 335 aqueducts, protecting this precious heritage for future generations.

The town council’s green champion, Cllr Annelise Furnace, said: “We're very excited about this new event for Sawbridgeworth, which we hope will enable residents to discover more about the river, its wildlife and its heritage. We want to showcase work done by the trust and others in looking after the Stort and highlight what a wonderful resource it is for us all, providing accessible green and blue space in the heart of our community.”
