Woman dies and two other people suffer burns and smoke inhalation in house fire in Elmdon

A woman died and two other people were taken to hospital suffering burns and smoke inhalation following a house fire near Saffron Walden.

Firefighters from Newport, Saffron Walden and Thaxted were sent to an address in Ickleton Road, Elmdon, at 11.18pm on Sunday night (February 9).

A spokesperson for Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said: “Firefighters were called to the scene of a well-developed fire affecting a semi-detached house.

“When they arrived at the address, they reported the whole building was alight.

“Firefighters were on scene tackling the fire and trying to minimise the damage to the neighbouring property for many hours.

“Essex firefighters were joined by firefighters from Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire fire and rescue services, who worked together to bring the fire under control.”

An investigation will be carried out to establish the cause of the blaze.
