Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus forced their way in and rescued the woman. They carried out CPR on her outside the flat and assisted paramedics before she was taken by ambulance to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow – the closest accident and emergency department – in a serious condition.

On Thursday morning a spokesman for Hertfordshire Constabulary said: "Sadly, the woman has since died. Her next of kin have been informed. A file is being prepared for the coroner.

"The cause of the fire is not being treated as suspicious at this time. Witnesses or anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 101 quoting ISR 97 of 6 April."

He said: "On arrival, crews found a fire in a ground-floor flat, with reports that a person was inside. Firefighters in breathing apparatus forced entry into the property and located and rescued one person.

"Firefighters carried out CPR [cardiopulmonary resuscitation] and assisted paramedics with immediate medical care, and the person was taken to hospital by the ambulance service.

"An investigation into the cause of the fire is taking place."

A Cavell Drive resident who woke to find fire engines and ambulances and a police cordon outside her home said that there was no sign of external damage to the block of flats.

Police cordoned off access to Cavell Drive while firefighters and paramedics dealt with the incident. The entrance to Haymeads Lane from Dunmow Road was also closed at one point and staff and patients trying to get to work at the hospital were parking at the Nags Head pub.

The East of England Ambulance Service sent three ambulances, a hazardous area response team, two rapid response vehicles and a car from Essex and Herts Air Ambulance.
