Bishop's Stortford Windhill21 Primary School teacher Sarah-Jane Pyne gives a maths masterclass
A Bishop's Stortford primary school teacher delivered a maths masterclass to 70 other educators.
Sarah-Jane Pyne, the Year 6 tutor at Windhill21, is a Maths Mastery specialist – breaking down larger, complex learning goals into smaller, more granular steps – and colleagues watched as she taught her class.
After the lesson, teachers were able to discuss how "the five big ideas" of Maths Mastery were crafted into the lesson.
Two of the pupils who took part, Callum Heath and Isla Tisdalem, said that it was initially daunting to be in the hall with so many people watching but they soon forgot about the audience and engaged in the lesson.
The event was organised through the Matrix Herts Maths Hub, which supports schools and colleges to achieve excellence in mathematics education from early years to post-16.
It is based in Bishop's Stortford at Herts and Essex High School in Warwick Road and serves education establishments across the whole of Hertfordshire and Harlow.
Philippa Moore, head of Windhill21, said: "What an opportunity for the teachers to develop professionally; being face to face has such an impact on the improvement of teaching.
"It was fantastic to see the hall buzzing with engagement in a discussion about learning they had observed."
