Learning Disability Personality of the Year award for Bishop's Stortford woman Vanessa Sauvary

Awards which highlight the achievements and personalities of people with learning disabilities in Hertfordshire have celebrated a young woman from Bishop's Stortford.

Vanessa Sauvary was named as the county's Learning Disability Personality of the Year in the Rumble Awards.

She was nominated by Visa Gomez-Dean, who works at Bishop's House day service in Bishop's Stortford, which Vanessa attends.

Vanessa, who enjoys books, holidays, shopping, music, parties and being around her friends, is described by people at the day service as being "full of joy".

Visa said: "Vanessa deserves an award because she really enjoys life and makes people around her appreciate happiness. You can't help but smile when you are with Vanessa."

The Rumble Awards, with categories including Good Spirit, Healthy Living and Leading Light, are organised and hosted each year by a group of people with learning disabilities called the Pioneer Spirits, as part of a project run by Pioneer Approaches.

Their Ali Jones said: "The Rumble Awards provide a great opportunity for us to celebrate people with learning disabilities. They can teach us so much; how to live in the moment, how to be there for one another, how to be non-judgmental and accepting, and how to make others happy by being kind, loving and friendly."

Chris Badger, Herts County Council's executive director of adult care services, said: "This event highlights the important part people with learning disabilities play in our local communities. The awards celebrate the healthy and fulfilling lives led by our diverse residents and it's great to see the winners recognised and congratulated for the positive impact they have on others."
