Young gardeners at Thorn Grove Primary School celebrate RHS Campaign for School Gardening’s highest accolade
Young horticulturists at Thorn Grove primary are celebrating after securing the highest accolade in the Royal Horticultural Society’s Campaign for School Gardening.
The pupils’ gardening club, Thorn Growers, achieved the RHS Level 5 Award and were rewarded with a plaque, a digital logo, £150 of National Garden gift vouchers and a selection of Mr Fothergill’s seeds.
The club, run by Wendy Gordon from Well Bean Gardening, has gradually turned a corner of the Bishop’s Stortford school field into a productive and beautiful garden, which they use all year round.
The children have raised money for plants and materials by selling produce from the garden. This year, sponsorship from Waitrose enabled even more children to participate and supermarket staff joined them at the site for a spot of weeding in April.
Head Peter Luck said: “Achieving the award is amazing and is a credit to Wendy and our Thorn Growers. There’s a real passion at Thorn Grove for outdoor learning and enhancing the children’s experiences of the environment and sustainability. Everyone is incredibly proud.”
Wendy said: “All the gardeners at Thorn Grove who’ve taken part in gardening activities since Well Bean started there in 2017 have played their part in achieving the Level 5 Award.
“It’s a testament to all their hard work, along with the support I’ve had from the school, and I’m looking forward to growing with Thorn Grove in the years to come.”
