Stansted Airport expansion: Uttlesford District Council announces arrangements for public to have their say

Arrangements for members of the public to have their say on Stansted Airport's expansion plans have been announced by planning authority Uttlesford District Council (UDC).

Special sessions for people to speak at will take place ahead of a UDC planning committee meeting to determine Manchester Airports Group's (MAG) application to raise the maximum passenger number cap from 35 million a year to 43 million, without an increase in flights and with a reduced noise profile.

Planning permission was granted in November 2018, but after the Conservatives lost control of the council at May 2019's localelections, the new Residents for Uttlesford (R4U) regime pushed through demands for a review.

The planning committee is meeting specifically to consider the adequacy of the Section 106 agreement between the council and MAG – measures to mitigate the impact of the development on the community – as well as any new material considerations since the committee granted the application 14 months ago.

The sessions will take place on successive Fridays on January 17 (from 10am) and January 24. The first one will be dedicated as the formal public speaking part of the planning committee meeting, including representations from town and parish councils.

People who wish to speak must register between 8.30am on Friday January 10 and midday on Thursday January 16. Each slot is for four minutes (five minutes for town and parish councils) and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. People can register to speak only once and cannot register multiple people in that request.

To register, email stanstedairportplanningapplication@uttlesford.gov.uk. Provide contact details, and state whether you support or oppose the recommendations or just want to comment, and whether you represent yourself or a group. The council will notify people of their allocated slots by 5pm on January 16.

Following the session on January 17, the 'meeting' will be adjourned until 11am on January 24, when the planning committee will consider the planning officers' recommendations and the public representations before deciding whether to authorise the release of a decision notice formally approving MAG's application.

All proceedings will be recorded and broadcast live via www.audiominutes.com/udc.
