Archie Edwards scores his first Bishop's Stortford goal in 4-1 win over Brightlingsea Regent in Pitching In Isthmian League, Premier Division

Bishop's Stortford made it three consecutive wins in all competitions with a 4-1 victory at Brightlingsea Regent on Tuesday night (September 14).

Ryan Charles opened his account for the season, Archie Edwards got his first Blues goal, Frankie Merrifield made it three goals in as many Pitching In Isthmian League matches and Jake Cass claimed his fifth in four outings.

The result means Steve Smith's men have climbed to 12th in the Premier Division with eight points from six games going into Saturday's home match against Bowers & Pitsea in the second qualifying round of the Emirates FA Cup.

After a quick free kick in the Blues' half, Jonny Giles won and took a corner which led to Charles' back-heel flick falling to Merrifield and the striker testing goalkeeper Charlie Turner.

At the other end, both Ken Feyi and Max Booth failed to convert a tap-in from Lewis Byrne-Hewitt's brilliant low cross from the right across the six-yard box.

Brightlingsea were immediately punished as Edwards' long clearance flicked off the head of Anthony Church into the path of Charles, who calmly went round the onrushing Turner and passed into an empty net.

Merrifield nearly doubled the lead after he was sent through by Archie Jones down the right, but Turner saved the shot from a tight angle with his legs.

The Blues made a fast start to the second half as they took the game away from their opponents.

Edwards fired high into the roof of the net from the left-hand side after making a late run from left-back to make it 2-0, and that was followed a minute later by Merrifield's strike which deflected off a defender and Turner as it went into the net from outside the box.

Merrifield went close with a header from Johnville Renee's right-wing cross, with the introduction of the latter and Cass giving the Blues' front line an extra boost in the closing stages of the game.

Cass, who was found by Jack Thomas, saw his overhead kick from 15 yards saved by Turner before the shot-stopper also did well to keep out Renee's half-volley.

The hosts pulled a goal back when Giddens conceded a penalty after a melee in the area at a corner and Keyi stepped up to convert from the spot.

But the Blues defended well to withstand a spell of pressure before Cass added a fourth late on after being unselfishly teed up by Archie Jones, who pounced on a weak back pass by the left back and unselfishly squared it to Cass, who had an open goal to aim for.

Substitute Bobby Unwin almost added a fifth in injury time, but his effort went just wide of the post.
