Stansted Hall & Elsenham spinner Sam Robinson picks up award from John Lever and Ray East

By Michael Vaughton

Talented teenager Sam Robinson rubbed shoulders with a couple of Essex greats when he picked up a prize at the annual Herts & Essex Cricket League awards.

The 14-year-old spin bowler was named the Division Two under-18 player of the season for his exploits with Stansted Hall & Elsenham’s first team.

Robinson helped the team secure promotion last summer by taking 18 wickets at an average of 24 from 98 overs, with his best figures of 4 for 35 coming against derby rivals Stansted.

And Robinson, who attends The Bishop’s Stortford High School, collected his prize from former Essex duo John Lever and Ray East at the ceremony.

Spinner East claimed 1,019 first-class wickets during his career, while left-arm fast bowler Lever earned international honours, playing in 21 Tests and 22 one-day internationals.

Robinson, who went on his school’s tour of Guernsey last year and will be going on their Barbados trip in 2020, said: “I am very happy to get this award and have even been offered some coaching by Ray East!”
