Century maker Bassingthwaighte and hat trick hero Lindop star as Stortford beat champions Potters Bar in friendly
Bishop's Stortford signalled their promotion intent this summer with an outstanding 73-run win over league champions Potter Bar on Saturday (April 24).
In their second friendly of the 2021 campaign, Stortford – who play in the Saracens Hertfordshire Cricket League Championship, one rung below their premier division opponents – batted first and posted a total of 238-4 which included an unbeaten 126-run partnership between Adam Bassingthwaighte (113 not out) and captain Tommy Burslem (65 not out).
In reply, the 2020 champions were all out for 165. Simon Lindop produced a five-wicket haul, including a hat trick.
The Saturday before (April 17), Stortford (197-9) had lost to premier division Hoddesdon (275) by 78 runs. Joe Burslem scored 52 while new boys Ben Twohig and Dom Clutterbuck, both 23-year-old left-arm spinners, took four and three wickets respectively.
Twohig, who is a right-handed batsman, made his first-class debut for Worcestershire in 2018 and is a former England U19 player, while Clutterbuck previously played in the Southern Premier League.
The Cricketfield Lane club start their league campaign on May 8 away to Flitwick.
Before then, Stortford will be one of 16 teams competing in the Readers Herts County 20/20 Competition this Saturday (May 1). They have been drawn in pool B with hosts Welwyn Garden City, Letchworth Garden City and Preston. Finals day is scheduled for Sunday June 27.
The Stortford second XI kick off their Saracens league division 4A campaign on May 8 with a home game against Rickmansworth.
The third XI will look to retain their position in the Herts and Essex Border League Premier Division while the fourths are newly promoted to Division 2.
The promising juniors have gained a year’s experience while Stortford Ladies are looking forward to the season under new captain Hayley Arrol.
The Cricketfield Lane club has recruited new players at all levels and is now running an extra side on Saturdays for friendlies and, for many weekends, two Sunday friendly XIs.
