Ben Sessions wins Hertfordshire Boys’ Under-16 Championship at Bishop’s Stortford Golf Club

Ben Sessions was crowned the county’s best in his age group after winning the Hertfordshire Boys’ Under-16 Championship.

The Bishop’s Stortford Golf Club member produced a four-under-par round of 67 on his home course to triumph by two shots.

Sessions, who plays off a handicap of +2.9, birdied four of his first six holes and moved to five under par after 14 holes.

The Bishop’s Stortford High School student dropped shots on both holes 15 and 16 before closing his round off with yet another birdie.

He finished two shots ahead of runner-up Ronnie Gibb, from West Herts, and three clear of Welwyn Garden City’s Harry Cox, who is the current men’s county champion and three weeks ago successfully represented England Under-16s against Ireland.

Sessions also captured the title in the under-15 category in which clubmate Callum Dargue was runner-up with a gross 75.

Sessions has followed in the footsteps of George Durkan, the last Stortford player to win the tournament in 2019. Now in his second year at college in America, Durkan was also in action last week as he tied for 10th place with a one-over par three-round total at an inter-collegiate event in Georgia.

The County Girls’ Autumn Meeting was played alongside the boys’ county championship and there was more Stortford success as Harriet Buchan won the stableford handicap competition with 43 points ahead of runners-up Ruby Esterbrook and Grace Maskell (both 38).

Esterbrook also claimed the cumulative gross prize for the Girls’ Spring and Autumn Meetings with Lilly Newton winning the net prize.
