Bishop's Stortford College student Zara Clark-Jones wins Under-18 Childéric Saddles Little Downham International on Rickamore Royal
Zara Clark-Jones triumphed at the Under-18 Childéric Saddles Little Downham International on a horse she had been riding for only a fortnight.
The 16-year-old Bishop's Stortford College student took the honours in the one-day event on Rickamore Royal, who stands at 16.2 hands, in what was a fantastic start to their new partnership.
The victory means the pair will now compete at the Under-18 Regional Championships due to be held in the spring.
Clark-Jones, who began jumping in 2017 and took part in her first one-day event the following year, scored a total of 29 penalty points in the dressage before achieving clear rounds in the showjumping and the 100cm cross country.
She also took part in the competition on her other horse, Arthurian Legend, and placed sixth with 33 penalty points.
Clark-Jones – who is hoping the Badminton Grassroots 2020 competition which was cancelled due to the pandemic gets rescheduled after she qualified for it on Arthurian Legend last year – rides four times a week. She receives additional tuition from specialist trainers and attends training camps in the holidays.
The teenager, whose main inspiration is reigning Badminton Horse Trials champion Piggy French, is aiming to get into the Frickley under-18 team and has the long-term ambition of being selected for the Great Britain junior squad.
