Oscar Poyser is saying farewell to The Bishop's Stortford High School in order to pursue his dream of becoming an American football star.

The 17-year-old is swapping the London Road secondary for Loughborough College after securing a place on a scholarship programme sponsored by the NFL Academy.

Poyser, who is taking A levels in physics, business studies and design technology, will now fit his studies around an intensive training schedule on the course which is designed to funnel students into the American University Scholarship programme for the NFL.

The 6ft 5in teenager, who has played rugby for TBSHS, in the second row, since joining the school, has already spent three years in Saracens' rugby development programme.

He also does strongman training like his older brother and former TBSHS pupil Alfie, 18, who was recently crowned champion at Koru Gym's annual strongman competition.

After applying for the NFL training programme Poyser had to supply videos of him lifting and playing rugby. This was followed by a trial at Loughborough and being allocated an offensive line coach.

His new regime will see him in the gym every day at 6am, followed by a block of lessons. Then he will follow a review of his recent training programme – which is filmed each time to learn techniques and monitor progress – before either another block of lessons or a technical training session followed by a second block of lessons.

"I want to congratulate Oscar on this wonderful achievement and opportunity," said Rob Stark, assistant headteacher and head of sixth form at TBSHS.

"These talent ID schemes are very competitive and I hope Oscar enjoys, learns and grows from this great scheme.

"Although it is a shame that Oscar has to leave TBSHS to enrol onto this programme, he will have benefitted immensely from the school's sports programme and all the opportunities on offer here.

"As an NFL fan, I do hope this opens up interesting pathways into the US collegiate system and beyond. We look forward to hearing more about Oscar's journey in the future."

Poyser, who starts in Loughborough this month, lives with his family in Little Hallingbury.

Mum Carly is the women's and girls' chair at Bishop's Stortford RFC and a business coach for women while dad Andy is a senior clerk for a barristers' chambers in London.

Brother Alfie is off to Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge in September to study strength and conditioning and is set to compete at the Arnold Sports Festival that month.

Once he completes the Loughborough course, Poyser is hoping to apply to an American university to read mechanical engineering or business management whilst obtaining sponsorship from the NFL before potentially earning a club contract.
