Bishop's Stortford Judo Club take on Scottish franchise Club Sportif Judo in online Zoom fitness challenge

Bishop's Stortford Judo Club's young members are fit and raring to go ahead of their return to the mat thanks to an online England-versus-Scotland challenge.

The judokas are looking forward to returning to action after their lockdown hiatus, with outdoor training set to begin on March 29 before under-18s and then over-18s can hopefully resume indoor sessions from April 12 and May 17 respectively.

And they are in good shape thanks to taking on members from Scottish franchise Club Sportif Judo in a competition on Zoom which tested five essential skills and disciplines of judo as well as core fitness.

Stortford were challenged by the judokas from north of the border and given a month to train for the internet-based test, with the competition split into four age categories – under-10s, 10-12s, 13-14s and 15-17s.

The five disciplines were high squat pulls, uchi-komi judo pulls using sport-specific bands, press-ups, wall hangs and sit throughs.

Stortford, who were the most successful club in Great Britain for under-18s in 2019, lost out overall, but the team produced numerous highlights.

Stand-out performances included Owen Lambert completing 100 press-ups, with his chest having to touch a tennis ball each time and each press-up having to be completed within three seconds with no resetting.

Jake Barr also did brilliantly having not been able to towel hang from a door for more than a couple of seconds before training for the challenge began and managing 18 seconds on competition day.

All of the youngsters rose to the occasion and grasped the opportunity to motivate and train themselves beyond the club's weekly Zoom lessons.

They also showed real competitive spirit and a desire to push each other to improve during the pre-challenge training used to select the best representatives in each category.
