Bishop's Stortford under-15 girls crowned Hertfordshire county champions after beating Redbourn in final

Bishop's Stortford under-15 girls beat Redbourn to be crowned Hertfordshire county champions.

The club's juniors, who had twice suffered defeat in previous finals, won the contest at Berkhamsted by 11 runs.

It was a wonderful finale for Stortford, whose under-11s and under-13s also competed hard for honours this season, as their experience and squad depth ensured they were successful.

Stortford, who had a weakened side out when they lost to their opponents earlier in the season, batted first, and Mabel Reid and Poppy O'Toole moved the score along nicely with knocks of 25 before retiring.

The middle and lower orders kept forcing the score along with good running between the wickets to post a competitive score of 129.

Reid quickly added a couple of wickets to her earlier runs as Redbourn were restricted to 15 off the first four overs of their reply.

Their opponents then launched a spirited attack to reach 96-3 and pile on the pressure before Florence Bellerby's brilliant run out of an important batter with a direct hit.

A key change in strategy by captain Elizabeth Clune tightened the run chase and starved the Redbourn batters of opportunities as they fell behind the required run rate.

And excellent bowling by Malli Came, who took 1-10 off her three overs at the death, ensured Stortford triumphed as the final three overs went for only eight runs.
