Bishop’s Stortford promise Hereford a stern test in FA Cup third qualifying round

Hereford can expect a stern test of their credentials when they visit Bishop’s Stortford in the Emirates FA Cup on Saturday (September 28), according to Steve Castle.

The Blues welcome the side who sit seventh in Vanarama National League North to the RDA Stadium for a third qualifying round tie.

The Bulls twice beat Stortford 1-0 when the teams met at the level above last season, but the hosts are currently on a five-game unbeaten run in all competitions and shocked higher-level Hemel Hempstead Town in the previous round.

“We shouldn’t have any fear,” said Blues manager Castle, whose side came from behind to beat Stourbridge 3-1 at home in the Pitching In Southern League, Premier Central at the weekend.

“I’ve watched them and [Hereford] are a very good Conference North football team. The expectation is probably coming from within our group rather than afar.

“From afar people will probably think they know what the result will be, but in our changing room it will be a case of us looking to do what we can do and being as positive as possible.

“I can guarantee Hereford are going to have one hell of a game and may the best team win. We will give them a very stiff test if nothing else.”

The Blues, who are scheduled to host winless Biggleswade Town in the league this evening (Tuesday September 24), have bolstered their squad by re-signing fans’ favourite Anthony Church.

The experienced midfielder is back at the club for a third spell having previously made 190 appearances and scored 25 goals.

His second stint included winning the Isthmian Premier title in 2022-23, but he needs to get up to speed after working abroad since then and not with a club.

“He knows the club and is another experienced lad that we need with a young group,” said Castle.

“He’s not had regular football for a while, but he’s a naturally fit lad and hopefully we can get him in the fold as quickly as possible.”

Meanwhile, the Blues have been drawn away to Southern League, Division One Central side Flackwell Heath in the third qualifying round of the Isuzu FA Trophy.

Their Buckinghamshire-based opponents are fourth in the league below with five wins from six matches. The tie is scheduled for Saturday October 5.
