Steve Smith is targeting maximum points from a run of three home games as Bishop’s Stortford look to cement their place in the Pitching In Isthmian League, Premier Division’s top five.

The manager saw his side begin their trilogy at the R&D Advisors UK Stadium in convincing fashion as they defeated Brightlingsea Regent 5-0 at the weekend to move back into fourth spot.

Southend United loanee Jimmy Wallace scored his first goal for the club and was joined on the score sheet by Ryan Charles, Darren Foxley, Chris Harris and Jonny Giles as they eased past the 19th-placed visitors.

They now host second-from-bottom East Thurrock United on Saturday before also entertaining mid-table Bognor Regis Town next Tuesday.

“We played really well. Brightlingsea aren’t the best team in the world, but you can only beat what’s in front of you,” said Smith, whose side had seen their 14-game unbeaten league run ended in a 2-0 loss at Hornchurch the previous week.

“We got the ball down and played some good football and got the result we needed to bounce back from last Saturday.

“Having five different scorers was very encouraging, as was having nearly 500 people there watching. It was a good day all round.

“It’s a big month for us. A lot of the teams up there are playing each other, so it’s an opportunity for us.

“Nothing’s a given in football and you’ve still got to turn up and do the business.

“As long as we apply ourselves and play the way we can play then we’ve got every opportunity to win these next two games. We know if we’re off it then it can go the other way.”

Captain Ryan Henshaw missed the win over Brightlingsea due to Covid, but he can return to lead the side as usual against East Thurrock.

Archie Jones, an unused substitute at the weekend, has been allowed to join Spalding United on a month’s loan.

Smith said the former Peterborough United midfielder was going to the Pitching In Northern Premier League, Midlands Division side to get match fitness ahead of the Blues’ run-in.
