New signing Terrell Egbri was on target for Bishop’s Stortford as they began their pre-season friendly campaign on Saturday (July 16) with a 3-1 win at Takeley.

The former Southend United attacker cancelled out the Essex Senior League side’s opener midway through the first half and was joined on the score sheet by Frankie Merrifield and Ryan Charles.

Fellow new recruits Tosin Olufemi and Matt Johnson also started while academy players Harrison Crowther and Josh Demetriou made second-half appearances.

Stortford host Dagenham & Redbridge tomorrow (Tuesday July 19) before visiting Brentwood Town on Friday (July 22) and entertaining Grays Athletic on Tuesday July 26.

Blues captain Ryan Henshaw had his team’s first chance when he headed off target from Darren Foxley’s free kick before the latter failed to trouble the goalkeeper with a 25-yard effort.

Merrifield headed wide from Archie Edwards’ cross and a long throw from Johnson bounced through the six-yard box with no team-mate able to make contact for a tap-in.

Despite all of the Blues’ early chances, it was the hosts who took the lead when a mix-up between Mark Haines and goalkeeper Jack Giddens allowed a Takeley forward to run through and slot into an empty net.

After almost creating a chance for Jack Thomas, Egbri netted the equaliser when he cut in off the right and drilled the ball low into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

Merrifield then gave the visitors the lead after the drinks break as he controlled Edwards’ cross from near the corner flag and volleyed home from close range.

Egbri had another opportunity before the break, but he could not find the target when aiming for the top corner from a similar position to his goal.

After the interval, Johnson’s free kick rebounded off the crossbar from the edge of the box following a foul on Edwards that was originally awarded as a penalty.

Chris Harris headed over the bar from a left-wing cross and Jonny Giles pulled his shot wide from the edge of the box, before Johnson made a smart turn in the box to beat the full-back but missed the target from a tight angle.

Stortford continued to create chances and, after Harris fired wide having dribbled past the keeper and attempted to chip the ball over a defender, Charles converted a low fizzing cross from Giles.

The Takeley shot-stopper made a great save with his feet to deny Charles a second goal from a powerful strike on the edge of the box. From the resulting corner, Anthony Church headed back across goal and Charles nodded wide, before Charlie Allum had an effort saved.
