Anthony Church scored his second goal of the season as Bishop's Stortford got back to winning ways with a 1-0 victory at Cray Wanderers on Saturday (Dec 11).

After three consecutive draws, the Blues picked up three points in the Pitching In Isthmian League, Premier Division with a second successive clean sheet as they extended their unbeaten run to 15 matches in all competitions.

The result keeps them in fifth place with 35 points from 20 fixtures, two points behind second-placed Folkestone Invicta.

Steve Smith's men are now preparing to visit Cheshunt in the third round of the Buildbase FA Trophy this Saturday (Dec 18).

Stortford started on the front foot against the Wands, who are fourth from bottom, as Jonny Giles headed over from Darren Foxley's cross and the latter rattled the post from a tight angle.

The hosts cleared after Jake Cass headed goalwards from Giles' free kick before Bailey Vose saved Ben Marlow's shot from the edge of the box.

The Blues continued to create chances and Church headed wide from Chris Harris' cross before Cass fired over from long range and Giles headed wide from Johnville Renee's cross

A Wands corner from Kyel Reid had to be hooked away by Marlow on the six-yard line while, at the other end, Marlow shot wide from the edge of the area.

Stortford goalkeeper Jack Giddens was called into action to dive at the feet of Anthony Cook and he also denied Jamie Yila and Jai Reason.

It was the Blues who took a 37th-minute lead when Church netted with a diving header after Cass had nodded on Giles' free kick.

On the stroke of half time, Wands captain Dean Beckwith's header from a free kick was saved by Giddens.

The hosts piled on the pressure after the break and tested the Blues defence. Cameron Brodie fired wide and Sam Robbins was required to clear Cook's free kick.

Cass then had a chance to increase the visitors' lead but saw his shot deflected into Vose's arms, before Church headed wide from Giles' corner.

A Cray equaliser seemed likely when Giddens slipped over on the edge of his area as he rushed out to clear the ball, but Robbins was on hand to spare his blushes with a clearance.

And the Blues clung on for maximum points as Wands substitute Andy Drury could only head onto the roof of the net from a corner and Freddie Barton saw his shot saved by Giddens.
