Charlie Gill saved two penalties as Bishop’s Stortford Community Football Club under-13 girls Azures beat Harlow Tekkers Cobras on spot kicks in the Hertfordshire Girls’ Football Partnership League Junior Shield.
The captain kept out a couple of efforts from 12 yards before Poppy Dittrich secured the victory and their team’s place in the semi-finals.
The last-eight tie had finished 0-0 as Azures showed lots of grit with four players absent and no substitutes to call upon.
Amelie d’Almeida and Flavia Zonfrilli-Santos were superb in defence while Hawaa Dhila and Maisie Bugg were energetic in midfield.
Will Davidson scored with an overhead kick to help under-16 Town beat Buntingford Cougars Blues 4-1 and return to the top of Mid-Herts Rural Minors League, Division Two.
His acrobatic effort was added to by man-of-the-match Adam Chudy, Noah Parker and Nic Hibbs.
Under-12 girls Cyans scored inside the first four minutes and went on to beat Knebworth Lionesses 5-2 in HGFPL Division Five.
They defended and attacked well, but what stood out most was their sportsmanship, attitude, and behaviour throughout the contest.
The under-16 girls played a HGFPL Division Two double header against St Albans City North, losing 3-2 and 3-1.
Stortford made a fast start to the first match as player-of-the-match Poppy Dwyer and Holly Penn both netted inside the opening five minutes, but their opponents fought back to lead at the break and they could not convert second-half pressure into an equaliser.
Stortford had to rejig things for the second game as injured goalkeeper Freya Hooper was replaced between the sticks by Remi Hasty while Dwyer had to leave to see a show in London.
They conceded twice in the first 10 minutes and let in another after the break before player-of-the-match Elise Ching created a consolation goal for Abi Berry.
