Bishop's Stortford motorsport star Callum Ilott claimed two fifth-place finishes in the second round of the FIA Formula Two Championship in Austria

Callum Ilott claimed two fifth-place finishes in the second round of the FIA Formula Two Championship in Austria.

Having claimed his maiden F2 victory on the opening weekend, the former Bishop's Stortford College pupil performed well at the Red Bull Ring for the second successive weekend and is now tied for second place in the standings.

Ilott, who competes for UNI-Virtuosi Racing, qualified in third again and felt he was on course for a podium finish in Saturday's feature race, but had to settle for fifth in very wet conditions.

He lost some ground in the opening few laps of Sunday's sprint race and was then hampered by the virtual safety car, but he was pleased with the way he managed his tyres to secure another fifth-place finish.

Prema Racing's Robert Shwartzman, of Russia, who now leads the championship, crossed the line first in the feature race while Art Grand Prix's Christian Lundgaard, from Denmark, won the sprint race.

Ilott and his rivals now head to Hungary for this weekend's racing at the Hungaroring. He is level with Lundgaard on 43 points with his fellow Ferrari Driver Academy member Shwartzman five points ahead of them.

"To leave Austria tied second in the championship is a great start to the year so I'm really thankful to the team for their support," said Ilott.

"Now we need to go to the Hungaroring and continue to be in the fight for wins and podiums."
