Leventhorpe School student Freya Crowdy gets hole in one at Gosfield Lake Golf Club in Essex

A 15-year-old golfer who goes to school in Sawbridgeworth celebrated after hitting her first hole in one.

Leventhorpe student Freya Crowdy achieved the feat at Gosfield Lake Golf Club, near Halstead, on Saturday June 21.

The teenager, who lives in Sheering, has recently joined the club as a junior member and is being coached by PGA professional Helena Holland.

Freya’s ace came on the 186-yard, par-three fifth hole, which has a stroke index of three, on the nine-hole Meadows Course.

But she almost did not make it as she had considered going into the clubhouse after the previous hole due to the heat.

On the tee, Freya chose to use her driver to ensure she had enough distance to reach the hole and so the ball could cut through the hot wind that was picking up.

“I was happy to see the ball go straight onto the green and that was already a positive,” she said.

“From the tee box, the hole is slightly downhill and a long way away, so all I could make out was that it was on the green and had rolled towards the hole.”

Freya was playing with a friend she met through the sport and the junior supervisor, and none of them, including herself, saw the ball go into the hole. As they walked down, they couldn’t see it at all and looked for it for a while.

“We couldn’t work out where the ball had gone and I thought about playing a drop as it wasn’t anywhere to be found,” she said. “It didn’t cross my mind to look in the hole, but then my friend suggested for me to.”

Freya described the moment as one she will never forget, being especially proud to achieve the feat on a hole that is narrow, with a pond and trees plus out of bounds either side.

“It’s every golfer’s dream and I just didn’t expect it, especially on that hole,” said the youngster, who plans to keep the Callaway ball forever.

Freya said her dad was really proud - he’s been playing golf for 23 years and is still waiting for a hole in one. Her grandad told her he has hit the pin off the tee before, but without the ball going in, so she is the first in her family to score one.

Freya got a photo by the flag and was later congratulated by her coach and a man in the clubhouse, but she was advised “not to say it too loud” or else she would be buying everyone a drink.
