Bishop’s Stortford will go into their final pre-season friendly against Hertford in a positive mood following their 38-7 victory over Bury St Edmunds at the weekend.
Joint head coach Marcus Cattell was pleased to see his side bounce back from the previous week’s 49-17 defeat away to the same opponents with a comprehensive win of their own at Silver Leys.
New signings Cole Swannack, who has been at Hartpury College, and Dan Powell, who has relocated to the area having been playing for Plymouth Albion, both scored tries to add to efforts from Josh Stannard, Alex Rayment, Sam Coleman and Rory Banks.
They now entertain Hertford on Thursday night (August 26, 8pm) in their last warm-up match before kicking off the new National League 1 season at Tonbridge Juddians on Saturday September 4.
“It was a very good reaction which had started in the week at training following the previous week’s disappointing performance and result,” said Cattell.
“We put some really good stuff together, with good attacking and defensive sets. It’s always nice as a coaching group to see things you’ve worked on in the week carried out on the pitch.
“There is still lots and lots of work to do and things which we can improve on.
“We’re not yet where we want to be, but it was a positive performance and a step in the right direction.”
Meanwhile, league officials have confirmed three teams will now be relegated from National League 1 this season following Old Elthamians’ withdrawal from the division. A planned 2022-23 restructure means only two will come up to replace them. At the other end, the champions will be promoted to the Championship with no one coming down.
