Will Butcher won a bronze medal at the World Union of Karate-Do Federations’ 14th European Karate and Kobudo Championships in Poland.

The Bishop’s Stortford College student, who is in Year 13, claimed the prize representing England in the 16-17 kumite category.

Butcher fought in 10 matches over two days as he competed in individual weighted and individual open weight competitions as well as two team events in Warsaw.

“I was extremely happy when I realised I’d won the bronze medal,” said Butcher, who took up the martial art at the age of seven and achieved his first dan black belt in 2021.

“Having put in so much work for a long period of time, as well as having to make weight, and to perform as well as I did, I was very proud of myself.”

Butcher, who trains several times a week under Sensei Shauna Carroll, has represented England at three previous WUKF championships and bagged two other medals.

He is hoping to take part in competitions in Romania and Ireland over the coming months while also studying for his A-levels at the Maze Green Road school.

“I want to give all the credit to my sensei, Shauna Carroll,” added Butcher. “She is a fantastic coach and teacher and has taught me since I joined the college in Form One [Year 5].”
