Bishop’s Stortford High School student Ben Sessions helps England under-16 golfers beat Ireland at Burnham & Berrow Golf Club in Somerset
Ben Sessions contributed two singles victories on his debut to help England under-16s triumph in their annual fixture against Ireland.
The Bishop’s Stortford Golf Club member was part of the mixed team, comprising six boys and six girls, who fought back to claim victory over two days at Burnham & Berrow Golf Club in Somerset.
The Saturday morning foursomes did not go well for Sessions, who was partnered by captain Charlie Rushbridge, and the England team.
The Bishop’s Stortford High School student and his colleague could not get a foothold in their match against Adam Fahey and John Moran, with the tie being concluded on the 15th green when they were five down.
England were 3½-2½ down after the foursomes and were indebted to the pairings of Emily Peaford and Lila Bissett and Elizabeth Wilson and Summer Carash whose victories accounted for two of the points.
Sessions took on Harry O’Hara in the afternoon singles and won the first hole to boost his confidence.
He eventually pulled away to be three up after 14 holes before being victorious on the 15th.
The 12 points on offer in the afternoon were shared, so Ireland maintained their slender one-point lead going into the second day, which comprised 12 singles matches.
Sessions had the chance to get revenge over Moran, but appeared to be out of luck as he trailed by two after seven holes.
However, the Stortford teenager produced back-to-back birdies as they reached the turn all square and then sunk two vital long putts to halve the next two holes.
Sessions won the next three holes to go three up and, with holes running out, his opponent agreed to shake hands on the 16th green with the score unchanged.
England won that section of the competition 7½-4½ to claim an overall 16-14 victory.
