Bishop’s Stortford remain in relegation mire after losing to Shenley Village in Saracens Hertfordshire Cricket League
Bishop’s Stortford remain in the relegation mire after losing at home to bottom-two side Shenley Village on Saturday (August 10).
The hosts lost their last Saracens Hertfordshire League, Premier Division timed match of the season by four wickets at Cricketfield Lane.
They are third from bottom, four points better off than their opponents, with four 50-over contests remaining.
Stortford won the toss and elected to bat, but found themselves 16-2 in the fifth over.
Joe Hawkins and Alex Ross were looking good and beginning to take control of the game when the latter was lbw for a run-a-ball 43.
Hawkins continued, but with the score on 121, he too was lbw for a well-made 52.
As in the previous week, Dom Clutterbuck (22no) dug in to help the team as they had to settle for a below-par but defendable total of 161 all out.
It was game on when Shenley Village slipped to 15-2 in reply as Sam Davis (3-50) had Charles Thurston caught behind by Hawkins and Simon Lindop (1-22) trapped Lathan Mahalingam lbw.
Stortford’s bowlers worked hard, but opener and captain Morgan Stanley (38no) stood firm and, despite Ben Twohig (2-42) taking two wickets and another two from Davis, he anchored the visitors’ innings and helped get them to 162-6 in the 43rd over.
The second team cemented their place at the Division 2B summit with an 80-run success at their Welwyn Garden City counterparts.
Openers Haitel Patel (39) and Henry Hawkins (42) gave the away side a good base of 70.
Other contributions were made by Joe Bunyan (25), Will Heywood (21), Murray Davidson (23) and Richie Heywood (23no) as Stortford posted 226 all out in 47.4 overs.
Welwyn fell to 18-3 and, despite partnerships of 40 and 60 for the fourth and seventh wicket respectively, were all out for 146 in the 40th over.
Hugh Williams (3-39), Bunyan (2-17) and Richie Heywood (2-23) had most success with the ball.
The third team registered a comfortable eight-wicket home win over Willingale in the Tees Herts & Essex Border League, Premier Division.
Joe Clune and Ollie Foot took two wickets apiece as the visitors were restricted to 160-6 from their 40 overs.
The hosts reached 161-2 in just 18 overs thanks to the efforts of Ben Foster (46), Harrison Barrett (55no) and Matt Pike (44no).
The fourth team lost by 116 runs at Potter Street & Church Langley in Division One.
Fraaz Ahmed (3-27) and Ophir Diemaker (3-39) did well with the ball, but the hosts racked up 249-8 as Dhouv Mahant (71) and Zahid Rafique (74) shared a 139-run partnership.
Stortford’s reply never got going and they were all out for 133. Graeme Sumner got 30 while Najmal Islam took 4-14.
