Herts and Essex High School's under-14 girls won the Tier 2 County Championship at the first time of asking.

Making their debut in the competition, the team beat Mill Hill 1-0 in the final to take the title and earn the right to represent Hertfordshire in the East Region Finals later this year.

They made a fine start to the event, held at Haileybury in Hertford, as Rafae Roberts' brace was added to by Violet Grey, Darcy Edwards and Charlotte Woodrow in a 5-0 victory over Dame Alice Owens.

One goal, scored by Woodrow, was enough to see off Simon Balle in a dominant display before they finished the group stage with a 100% record as Edwards struck twice in a 2-1 win against Aldenham.

And a scrambled goal from Edwards ensured they beat Mill Hill, who are coached by former Trinidad & Tobago international Kwan Browne, to claim the crown.

"This is a phenomenal achievement for the girls given that it is the first time we've entered this tournament," said the Warwick Road secondary's director of sport Hayley Jones.

"It follows on from an encouraging semi-final place by the U16s the previous week and vindicates our strong partnership with Bishop's Stortford Hockey Club.

"The squad are now eagerly looking forward to the regional finals."
