Bishop's Stortford Swimming Club's Alyson Fordham wins five gold medals and breaks several records at Swim England Masters National Championships in Sheffield

Alyson Fordham won five gold medals and broke several records at the Swim England Masters National Championships.

She was part of an eight-strong Bishop's Stortford Swimming Club contingent at the event in Sheffield, which is the highlight of the masters short course (25m pool) calendar.

Fordham, who competes in the 65-69 age category, was joined by Sally Winter (60-64) as well as Alex Catton, Callum Davis, Dan Chada, Joe Collins, Niamh James (all 18-24) and Jake Lloyd (25-29).

Fordham broke her own British and European records in the 200m freestyle to take gold in 2min 33.14sec with a huge 20-second winning margin.

Club president Winter kept her 10-year 200m freestyle championship winning streak by claiming gold in 2.28.07.

There were top-six finishes for James and Chada in the 100m backstroke; James was also seventh in the 200m freestyle and Lloyd was sixth in the 100m butterfly and eighth in the 200m freestyle.

The second day got off to an explosive start with Fordham and Winter competing in their respective 400m freestyle races.

Fordham, the current British record holder, beat the competition by 21 seconds to win another gold while Winter defended her title with a second gold as she dominated the field by 13 seconds.

Fordham then went on to set new European records in the 50m freestyle, with a staggering time of 30.33sec, and the 100m individual medley (1.20.35).

Davis narrowly missed out on a medal in the 200m butterfly as he came fourth in 2.18.94 and James smashed her PB in the 50m Freestyle (27.22) to finish sixth. Catton and Chada were eighth and ninth respectively in the 50m backstroke with just 0.1sec between them.

On the final day, Fordham broke the British record in the 100m freestyle to add to her tally of gold medals in total and Winter added the 100m freestyle title in the age group below to her 100/200/400m triple crown.

James got a silver medal in the 200m IM, only narrowly missing out on gold, while Lloyd was fifth and Catton was eighth. And Lloyd was eighth and Davis just missed out on a top-10 finish in the 50m butterfly.

The eight gold medals, one silver and numerous top-10 finishes resulted in Stortford coming sharing 49th place in the points race out of the 271 clubs competing.

Additional results: Callum Davis - 11th 100m butterfly, 15th 50m freestyle; Jake Lloyd - 14th 100m freestyle; Dan Chada - 17th 50m freestyle, 26th 100m freestyle; Joe Collins - 18th 50m breaststroke, 19th 100m breaststroke, 51st 50m freestyle.
