Bishop's Stortford Squash Club's men's first team put a two-year wait behind them to lift the 2020 Herts Cup and complete a double.

They triumphed 3-2 over Tring in the final of the knockout competition – postponed due to the pandemic – to add to their league title.

Stortford captain and club coach Jake Byrne, at #3, stepped out on court at neutral venue Radlett the day after his isolation period for Covid finished. He tried to outfox top Herts junior Ethan Duncan, but lost a tight match 3-1.

At #1 on the other court, club vice-captain and coach Nick Mulvey had far too much for Charlie Yerrell as he triumphed 3-0.

Jon Matthews, at #2, needed a tie-break to take the first against Alex Preston before winning the next two in style for a 3-0 success against a tiring opponent.

Stortford's No 1 junior Alex Banhidai, at #5, then enjoyed a great debut as he won a nip-and-tuck encounter with the clever Darren Withey 3-2 to complete his team's victory.

Will Johnson, at #4, gave a good account of himself in the dead rubber against the tricky Phil Yerby in a 3-1 reverse.

"A great effort by all the players and the victory nicely complements the 2020 league title to complete the double," said captain Byrne.

"Looking forward to getting some matches under our belts in the 2022 season. Well done Stortford!"
