Former Bishop’s Stortford schoolboy and Loughborough University student William Gilbank wins bronze at British National Track Championships
William Gilbank claimed his first individual senior medal after taking on top GB riders and Olympians at the Lloyds Bank British National Track Championships in Manchester.
The former Birchwood High School student, 19, took bronze in an intense 80-lap scratch race at the National Cycling Centre.
Gilbank, riding for One Life Cycle, made his move with just seven laps remaining as he launched an audacious attack in pursuit of a podium finish.
Despite being caught by Sam Fisher, who ultimately took silver, the teenager stayed strong to defend his position and finish third.
“This was a hard-fought race and I gave everything I had,” said Gilbank after the race, which was won by Noah Hobbs.
“Noah’s early lap meant the gold was already decided, but I knew I had a shot at the podium.
“Attacking with seven laps to go was a calculated risk and I’m thrilled to have earned the bronze. I’m excited for what’s ahead!”
Gilbank, who is studying at Loughborough University, had already collected multiple national medals in the youth and junior categories.
