Former Bishop’s Stortford High School student Alfie Poyser takes teen/junior silver medal at Official Strongman Games in USA

Alfie Poyser got an early 21st birthday present when he claimed a silver medal at the Official Strongman Games in the United States.

The former Bishop’s Stortford High School student came second out of 10 in the teen/junior competition at the Alliant Energy Center Coliseum in Madison, Wisconsin.

Poyser, from Little Hallingbury, was the only English junior taking part and he finished three points behind champion Cole Bolton and half a point ahead of third-placed Landon Whitt.

The athlete began the event by sharing first place in the log press as he managed five repetitions of a 145kg weight in 60 seconds.

Poyser then took the outright lead by coming third in the yoke walk, going for 17 seconds with a 324kg weight over a 15m drop-and-return course.

Next up was the axle deadlift ladder, with the weights increasing from 190kg up to 270kg. He felt it should have been his best event, but missing his grip on the bar cost him a few seconds and he took fourth spot to slip down to third overall.

Poyser then bounced back from that disappointment to come second in the sandbag loading medley as he managed a total weight of 397kg in a minute.

All of his efforts meant he was declared runner-up with 33.5 points as he bagged the silver medal 11 days before turning 21 on Monday December 16.

Poyser has previously come third in England’s strongest junior competition and been fourth in Britain’s strongest junior.

He is coached by Josh Lancaster and runs online coaching business Poyser Strength Coaching.

His sponsors are Silverback Gymwear and Alpha-Reformed CBD, he is affiliated with Cerberus Strength and works on his rehab with Mike Croft of Sawbridgeworth-based Stronger Health.

Poyser was also recently in Birmingham to cheer his mum and Bishop’s Stortford rugby club lifetime vice-president Carly on as she was crowned the world’s strongest adaptive athlete in her category at the Magnus Ver Magnusson Adaptive Strength World Championship. She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2022.
