Daisy Fox struck twice to guide Bishop’s Stortford to a 4-1 victory at Norwich Dragons in the East Women’s Hockey League, Premier Division on Saturday (February 15).
The leaders went ahead through Katherine Langridge before Lou Davies quickly doubled the advantage.
Fox extended the lead with a precise finish from a tight angle and, after the hosts pulled a goal back, completed her brace to wrap up the points.
The Dragons did end the contest well, but the table-toppers, who are two points clear at the summit, defended bravely and goalkeeper Ibby Welldon saved a penalty flick.
The second team suffered a 4-2 home defeat at the hands of Colchester in Division 1S.
Fiona Mulder and Jennifer Pearce got what proved to be consolation goals for the hosts.
There was better news for the third team as they ran out 5-2 home winners over Berkhamsted & Hemel Hempstead in 2SW.
The fifth team almost grabbed a last-gasp equaliser when losing 1-0 at home to Letchworth II in 3SW.
A shot flashed narrowly wide and was the last action of the contest, with their opponents having broken the deadlock early in the second half.
The sixth team fought back in the second period to draw 2-2 at Brentwood II in 3SE.
Trailing 2-0 at the break, they got back into the contest when Karen Leach combined with Hannah Witchalls to make a well-placed reverse tap-in on the post.
And, with time running out, Lianne Warnell slotted in the leveller during a scramble following good work by Leach.
Sarah Alderson earned the player-of-the-match prize.
The seventh team gave 5SW leaders Letchworth III a scare before succumbing 3-1 away from home.
Mary Sanders gave the visitors a fourth-minute lead and they defended well, with goalkeeper Lis Foote making some good saves.
But injuries meant they had to resort to a makeshift defence and their opponents turned things around to triumph.
The eighth team lost 2-1 at home to their St Albans counterparts in 6SW.
There was a 5-1 home reverse for the ninth team against Potters Bar in 7SW while, in the same division, Jenna Flanagan’s brace and Catherine Smith’s effort helped the 10th team (development) win 3-0 at Chiltern II.
In the East Men’s League, Alistair Charlton claimed a hat-trick and Jamie Brooks bagged a brace as the first team triumphed 5-0 at home to Ipswich.
The second team were 6-1 winners at St Albans IV in 2SW and, in the same division, the third team lost 7-3 at home to their St Albans counterparts.
Richard Turner got the fourth team’s consolation goal in their 4-1 defeat at Blueharts V in 4SW while James Nash netted twice to earn the fifth team a 2-1 home success over Blueharts VI in 5SW.
Joe Clune and Henry Lowe scored and Duncan Laws was named player of the match as the sixth team gave a good account of themselves in a 7-2 loss at 6SW leaders Potters Bar IV.
