Frankie Merrifield smashed in his 11th goal of the season as Bishop's Stortford triumphed 3-1 at Bowers & Pitsea on Monday (January 27).

He was joined on the score sheet by Chris Harris and Jonny Giles at the Len Salmon Stadium as the Blues extended their unbeaten run in the Pitching In Isthmian League, Premier Division to 13 matches.

Stortford, who got revenge over Bowers & Pitsea for knocking them out of the Emirates FA Cup in September, took the lead 10 minutes before half time when Harris side-footed home from the edge of the box after good work by Ryan Charles down the right.

Charles and Darren Foxley were both denied by goalkeeper Mitchell Beeney early in the second half before Merrifield rifled the ball home from 25 yards in the 53rd minute.

The Blues, who are fourth in the table, scored again nine minutes from time when Giles shrugged off a couple of challenges and sent the ball into the bottom corner.

The hosts did claim a 90th-minute consolation when substitute Max Cornhill stabbed home following a scramble from a corner, but Stortford were good value for their fifth away league win of the campaign.

Up next for Steve Smith's men is a home game against promotion rivals Cheshunt on New Year's Day. The sides are locked together on 38 points, with the Ambers above the Blues in third on goal difference.

Stortford will also be out to avenge December 18's defeat at Cheshunt on penalties in the third round of the Buildbase FA Trophy.

After that they are back on the road at 14th-placed Potters Bar Town on Monday January 3.
