William Gilbank helps Loughborough University win gold and break team pursuit record at British Universities and Colleges (BUCS) Track Championships

William Gilbank struck gold and broke a record at the British Universities and Colleges (BUCS) Track Championships.

The former Birchwood High School student was representing Loughborough University in the team pursuit alongside team-mates Kieran Riley, Bo Mayer and Josh Knowles in Derby.

The quartet posted a time of 4min 17sec in qualifying to book a showdown with Nottingham in the final.

They moved through the gears to set a BUCS record of 4min 10.47sec - hitting 57.49kmh over the 4km distance - to win the title in dominant fashion.

It made for a double celebration for Gilbank, 19, as he claimed a silver medal in the elimination race earlier in the day.

“The elimination was a bit of fun, if not a bit dangerous at times, however the team pursuit was the prize we had come for,” said Gilbank, who is studying maths at Loughborough.
