John Hedges to take on Nathan Quarless in English cruiserweight title eliminator on May 17 after linking up with Ricky Hatton
John Hedges will compete in an English cruiserweight title eliminator next month in his first bout after teaming up with Ricky ‘The Hitman’ Hatton.
The Takeley fighter, who turned 23 today (Friday April 11), will take on Nathan Quarless at London’s Copper Box Arena on Saturday May 17.
And Hedges is now being coached by Hatton, who held multiple world championships in the light-welterweight division and one at welterweight during his career, as he bids to extend his 10-fight unbeaten record since joining the professional ranks.
“I’ve known Ricky a long time. He’s always spoken highly about my boxing ability and we linked up in Spain last year whilst on holiday, said Hedges, who went to Forest Hall School in Stansted.
“We discussed a few things and I could see he sees boxing how I see it and that if I ever needed a change of coach he’d be my man to go to.
“In my old gym there were a few disagreements and I felt I was getting too comfortable and not pushing hard enough. So I decided to invest in myself and commit to a full change, moving up north on my own for a seven-week training camp with Ricky.”
Hedges, a 6ft 6in southpaw, is part of the Matchroom Boxing stable and the 10-round bout in the capital will be screened live on DAZN.
Quarless, who hails from Merseyside, has a record of 13 wins and one defeat.
“I’m really excited for this fight,” said Hedges, who beat Lewis Oakford to secure the Southern Area cruiserweight crown in his first pro title contest in the summer.
“My opponent has had 13 wins and one loss and boxed at English title level, so, on paper, it should definitely be my biggest test.
“I’m training like never before and hope to get the best out myself. With Ricky’s knowledge, I’ve put my foot on the gas and I’m already in top shape for May 17.”
