Five Herts and Essex High School girls did themselves proud in the Secondary Schools National Team Relay Championships.

Catherine Clune, Ellen Millar-Bond, Emma Fields, Miriam Moukdad and Ella Greatbatch – who are all members of Bishop's Stortford Swimming Club – performed well against strong opponents at the London Aquatics Centre.

The Herts and Essex team, which then included Kirsty Neill, had qualified for two events by coming second and third in the 4x50m medley relay and 4x50m freestyle relay respectively at the East & South East Division Championships.

In the national competition, which was dominated by specialist swimming boarding schools, the freestyle team of Clune, Millar-Bond, Fields and Moukdad came 18th.

And the medley squad of Clune, Greatbatch, Fields and Moukdad reached the final, where they came ninth in 2min 14.81sec, with just two hundredths of a second separating seventh to ninth.

The Secondary Schools National Team Relay Championships is the longest-running championship series organised by the English Schools Swimming Association and is open to secondary school-aged swimmers from across England.
