Hockerill Cricket Club's colts section on the rise as under-10s win the league at the first attempt
It was a night of celebration when Hockerill Cricket Club hosted its annual awards ceremony, with the growing colts section earning special praise for its achievements.
Teams at under-10, under-11 and under-15 level were fielded by the Beldams Lane-based club during the summer.
Needless to say head coach Richard Andrews was thrilled when the under-10s topped the league in their first season, with many of the children having only started playing the game the season before.
It was equally encouraging to see the under-11s finish in mid table and the under-15s be runners-up in their respective leagues.
"The colts section has a fabulous ethos and encourages children of all abilities to take part in training as well as matches," said Andrews.
In the senior section, Hockerill fielded two teams in the recently-folded Herts & Essex League as well as a Sunday friendly side.
The Saturday first team gained promotion from Division Four while the seconds came mid table in the league below.
Two Hockerill players won league awards as Asim Washead, who was joint top with 30 league wickets, was named best bowler and Alex Francis' 18 dismissals was the most achieved by a wicketkeeper.
Hockerill accept colts from Year 4 upwards and are actively looking for new players who are in current school Years 6 to 10.
Summer training is held on Friday evenings between 6.30pm and 7.30pm from the end of April to the end of July. Colts in Year 5 upwards can also train throughout the winter. Email Andrews at email@example.com to find out more.
