Bishop's Stortford Golf Club teenager Max Hopkins in England boys' squad for European Team Championships

Max Hopkins has been called up to the England boys' squad for next week's European Team Championships following a storming display in the prestigious Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters.

The 16-year-old Bishop's Stortford Golf Club member recovered from a poor start to claim second place at Nizels Golf & Country Club in Kent.

The ranking points he earned moved Hopkins, who plays off +3, up to second in the English boys' under-18 order of merit and earned him the international call-up.

The Hockerill Anglo-European College student is now getting ready to head to Chantilly in France to compete with his England team-mates, with the tournament getting under way on Tuesday (July 9).

In the 72-hole Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters, Hopkins found himself four over par after the first 10 holes, but a breathtaking end to the round saw him hit six birdies to end with a two-under-par 70 in fourth place.

Solid rounds of 72, 72 and 69 followed as he finished the competition five under par with a total of 283, five shots behind winner Ben Schmidt.

Meanwhile, Stortford's Jackie Foster was also in fine form as she came runner-up in the English Senior Women's Strokeplay Championship at St Enodoc in Cornwall.

The 2016 and 2017 champion picked up valuable ranking points as she bids to represent England in the summer internationals.

And George Wright secured an excellent sixth place in the County Colts Championship at Berkhamsted as rounds of 74 and 75 left him just three shots off third.
