Saracens Hertfordshire League: Sawbridgeworth II break duck in style by recording one of their biggest league wins
Sawbridgeworth II broke their Saracens Hertfordshire League, Division 5B duck in style as they thrashed Luton Town & Indians III by 206 runs to record one of the biggest league wins in their history, writes Richard White.
The result moves Alex Syed's men out of the relegation zone and they are now eight points clear of Hertingfordbury, who they face in a crunch game this weekend.
They piled up 316-4 in their 50 overs – the highest team total recorded across any division on Saturday (July 17).
Gabriel Inch (95) and James Bovaird (47) gave them the perfect start as they put on 113 for the first wicket, but that partnership was later surpassed by Sam Timms (59 not out) and Syed (65 not out) as they plundered 136 runs from the last 19 overs.
In reply, Luton's third string were skittled out for just 110 midway through the 26th over. Andrew Dongworth (2-16), Saad Naveed (3-28) and Nick Dale (2-24) were all on target with the ball along with William Jones (3-40), who took the last wicket with the help of a catch by his son Matthew.
Meanwhile, the first XI's alarming run of form continued as they slumped to an 81-run defeat at high-flying Leverstock Green in Division One.
Chasing their hosts' total of 215-7, Steve Ashman's side were all out for 134 after losing their last eight wickets for just 44 runs. The result sees them drop to sixth in the table having managed just one win from their last six matches.
Their run chase had begun brightly with Danny Wilson (19) and Owen Groves (38) putting on 41 for the first wicket. The latter added a further 39 with Jack Timms.
The visitors advanced to 90-2 at the halfway stage of their innings before Timms fell lbw for 27 – the fourth occasion he has been dismissed in the 20s this season.
Sawbo scored only one boundary in the last 17 overs of their innings. George Kenny (16) was their only other player to reach double figures as they were finally dismissed off the first ball of the 43rd over.
Earlier, Travis Hussain had been the pick of the Sawbo attack by taking 4-32 in his first spell in a league game since joining the club last season. Vibhor Yadav (1-22) and Timms (2-21) were the other successful bowlers, with opener Charlie Mahanama (61) top-scoring for the visitors.
Meanwhile, the third XI's home clash with Wormley in Tees Herts and Essex Border League, Division Two was called off.
