Gabriel Ion struck double gold as he enjoyed huge success in the British Taekwondo Council Championships.

The Bishop's Stortford & Epping Taekwon-do member was the star performer in both the boys' blue belt sparring and team sparring events.

He won his semi-final in the individual competition 3-2 before romping to a 10-0 victory in the final at Worcester's University Arena.

Gabriel's seven-year-old brother Alex won his first fight 6-0 and just missed out on a bronze medal.

There was a club showdown in the women's green belt sparring final as Jodie Roffey pipped Jackie Fletcher to the gold medal, with the latter settling for silver.

Paul Roffey was a bronze medalist in men's yellow belt heavyweight sparring with wins in his first two rounds.

The other students taking part were Michael Barford, Dave Cogan, Isaac Manning, Alice Roffey and Adam Rooze.

"Gabriel has now picked up gold in his last four competitions, including the British Championships," said instructor Colin Mowatt, fourth dan.

"It was also great to see three of the Roffey family competing for the very first time and doing so well."

The club trains at Birchwood High School and the Parsonage Community Hall in Bishop's Stortford on Tuesdays and Saturdays respectively.
